An old family recipe is the basis for The Gratitude Cookie™. We used to make these cookies at the holidays when I was a kid. As an adult, when I made them for friends, they would always say, “WOW, these cookies are so thin, crunchy, buttery, sweet (but not too sweet)… Yummy! You should sell them!” But I already had a full time job and wasn’t looking for another.

Then one day, when I wasn’t working in corporate anymore, I started thinking about what I could do next. I remembered the cookies and decided to put that recipe to work. The original idea was to help business people show appreciation for their clients, referral sources and employees and help them promote their image at the same time. For several years, they were commonly known only as “Zen Rabbit Cookies.”

Although the concept of gratitude was always there, the branding wasn’t as well developed as it is now. I renamed the product The Gratitude Cookie™ and started encouraging cookie eaters to think about something they are grateful for as they eat each thin, crunchy treat. We also began including a card in each box with an inspirational saying on one side and the question “what are you grateful for today?” on the other. These ideas extend the whole chain of appreciation from the person giving the cookies to the person enjoying them. Zen Crunch™ was added to the product line after my baking partner said, “hey, I’ve got something you’ve got to taste.” We mixed up a batch with whatever fruit and nuts we had on hand and I was immediately hooked; it was deee-licious! Right now, there are two different versions available. I love them both, but taste for yourself and see which you prefer. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.
